The Scoop on Sustainability Coaching

Since we have a Sustainability Coach on staff at All Shades, but since, sometimes, people don't know exactly what that means, I talked with our SC, Deborah, to clear up any confusion. Here's what she shared so you can have the scoop on her services and find out what an incredible resource she is to our store.

What Deborah offers:

*Home consultations
*Business consultations
*Backyard consultations for organic gardening and permaculture.

What a Sustainability Coach does:

She helps navigate all the information out there so you don't have to, and helps assess your lifestyle in terms of how friendly it is to you and the environment. Then she helps you on the journey to get where you want to go in terms of going green.

Deborah looks at a home or space as a whole system and helps that system work better, more efficiently, and more sustainably, all according to your income level and what you feel comfortable tackling.

What kinds of questions frame the process of one of her eco-consultations:

How do you feel in this space?
How do you want to feel in this space?
How do you want this space to work?
What environmental steps do you want to take?
How can we make nature work for us in this space?

Topics covered in a typical home consult:

For example, she might look at energy efficiency, air quality and non-toxic alternatives, water conservation and water issues, sustainable kitchen practices, kids' health and environment, passive solar and air flow, making nature work for the home, replacing inefficient/toxic products, and composting.

What you walk away with:

A full report on her findings.
A follow-up phone conversation to make sure no questions are left unanswered.
Research and recommendations custom-tailored for you.

For more information on having a sustainability consultation, visit Deborah's website at www.creativegreen.net or to set up a consult, email her directly at creativegreen@hotmail.com.

Our Sustainability Coach Shares: Interview With Good Food

We're proud to announce that Deborah, our store Sustainability Coach, was recently on KCRW's excellent program, Good Food with Evan Kleiman.

Please listen to the eleven minute segment by scrolling down the page here.

And here are her simple seven secrets of sustainability in that favorite room of the house in case you missed last Saturday's workshop:

Tip #1 - Consider the types of food you will buy.

Tip #2 - Always store foods in ceramic, glass containers and stainless steel/aluminum containers.

Tip #3 - Pay attention to ways that you can conserve energy in cooking.

Tip #4 - A sustainable kitchen has the potential to create zero waste.

Tip #5 - Grow your own herbs and vegetable.

Tip #6 - Bring awareness and compassion to our relationship with food.

Tip#7 - Prepare yourself to be more sustainably "on the road" by carrying an "urban eco-pack."

Workshop in Review

Those of us who were lucky enough to be at yesterday evening's Sustainable Kitchen Workshop had an inviting, informative time of sharing, learning, and inspiration about how we can further our connection to food, place, the land, and the planet as a whole.

Staff Sustainability Coach, Deborah, led us in activities to get us plugged into our own food consciousness and then shared her veritable treasure of knowledge from her years living, farming, and cooking in a sustainable food community at the Zen Monastery Peace Center.

Deborah covered shopping, preparing, storing, composting and everything in between.

She brings her practices there to city living in a way that emphasizes awareness, non-judgement, and FUN!

Among the many, one resource I took away is the importance of buying shares in Community Supported Agriculture as a way to directly know, support, and enjoy the fruits of organic, biodiverse, sustainable farming--the kind that can heal the planet and our relationship to food.  One farm Deborah recommends is Tierra Miguel Foundation in San Diego. The farmers there drive up with boxes of goodies once a week.  You can get the details and join up here.

You can also find other wholesome, sustainable food options at stores and restaurants in your community at the Eat Well Guide online.

And, come check out the Zen Monastery Cookbook and a number of other food-related books at the store to give you ideas of how to let the fresh fun begin in your kitchen.

We hope you'll join us at next Wednesday's workshop:
