Earth Mama Angel Baby

If you're an earthy mama to be, do we have some little goodies from Earth Mama Angel Baby to help you before and after delivery of your little bundle of joy.

For pregnancy, there's Heartburn Tea made with organic herbs like marshmallow root and chamomile to soothe and settle heartburn.  Easy to swallow relief indeed.

For breastfeeding, there's Milkmaid Tea, E.M.A.B.'s most popular item!  It helps encourage milk production, naturally.  Can you say galactagogue?  (A fancy word for a milk-producing food.)  It's totally organic and totally works.

For weaning, when the day comes that you don't need so much of that milk anymore, you can switch teas and try No More Milk Tea.  The secret organic ingredients in this one have the opposite effect, telling your body to ease up.

Be sure to check out the Earth Mama Reading Room as well for a plethora of articles on all things earthy mama, from breastfeeding to herbs to use and avoid to phthalates.

Eco-friendly Linens

Because towels come into intimately close contact with our skin and we spend (hopefully) eight hours a night wrapped in our sheets, it's super important that they're made of healthy stuff.

Not only that, but if we use pesticide-laden sheets and towels, our comfort depends on pounds of pesticide that harm people and our planet.

We've got some alternatives to help you shower and sleep sustainably from here on out.

Bamboo Moon towels are made of that fast-growing fiber that's anti-microbial and hypoallergenic while being 60% more absorbent than Egyptian cotton.  You get the benefit of a low-impact alternative that also boasts incredible softness and durability.  If you haven't yet felt bamboo, you'll be amazed at how much it feels like silk.

Under the Canopy sheets 100% organic 250 thread count sheets are luxurious while being mindfully made.  You rest assured nothing harsh in their manufacture will affect you or where they came from.

Your bathroom and bedroom will welcome the change.

EcoKids

If you're interested in raising kids who are healthy and concerned about the environment, you may just be on the path to raising an EcoKid.

We've got a book of the same name in the store in our sustainable kids section.  EcoKids by Dan Chiras can help you in the process of raising such a youngster.

It's a positive, inspiring look at fostering empathy and eco-principles in children while they connect to nature. Taking care of kids and teaching them to take care of themselves and the planet can have an enormous payoff for us all.

Home Performance Testing

All Shades will be offering Home Performance Testing from now on (but especially starting in September when our green building professional, Natalie, gets back from vacation).

If you're looking for more health, more comfort, and more efficiency, this kind of test may be right for you.  Essentially, by using a blower door to pressurize the house and using noninvasive gadgets to peek around in your walls, crawl space, and attic, we can help you determine where you're losing energy, how much, and how to fix that, all for a few hundred dollars.

For people with allergies or other health concerns, making sure your house is heating and cooling itself well can do a world of good.  Plus, you'll save money as we often let 40% of our AC or heat out the door if our house isn't up to its fitness snuff.

At the end of the half-day, you'll get a report of recommendations to help your house perform optimally like replacing or repairing you HVAC system or reconfiguring or upgrading your insulation.

So, if you'd like to make your home run as smoothly, safely, comfortably, and efficiently as possible, give us a ring at the store and we'll tell you more about Home Performance Testing.

(323) 665 - 7454.

To a happy, healthy, green home!

Viola Jeans

As fall approaches, you may be slithering into jeans more and more (hey, a lot of people don them on the hottest days of the year, too).

We hope you'll consider going organic with your denim.  Organic denim ensures that pounds and pounds of pesticide are saved from entering our soil, air, water, along with the bodies of farmworkers, and, if it's the right brand, that workers making them are treated fairly.

Consider this: on average, it takes 3/4 of a pound of pesticides to make one pair of jeans.  Lucky for us, there are some brave folks growing cotton naturally.  You can find out more about the backstory of jean production in Rachel Louise Snyder's Fugitive Denim.

We're carrying Viola Jeans, crafted by a dapper denim company from Texas.  We've got a variety of sizes of women's Violas that are said to flatter any figure--they stretch and flare in all the right places.  Plus, they're totally organic cotton and come in a retro 80s high-waisted model.

Unfortunately, we don't have a picture at the moment to show you, so you'll just have to come see for yourself (more washes and colors are coming soon!).

Hankees

Yes, you could blow your nose with these and save tissue.  You could also wipe up spills or dab at the corners of your mouth.  Most likely, you'll want to fashion one on your head or around your neck to add some sizzle (especially when you don't feel like bothering with your humidity-frazzled hair).

Speesees is known for kids' clothes, and we've got some cute organic styles in stock for little ones right now.  But, these hankees are for grownups because they want organic, fun, and fair wares, too.  This company is committed and can be trusted to say no to pesticides, dangerous dyes, PVC, formaldehyde, and dioxin while saying yes to cute.

We've got speesees hankies with our clothes and accessories (12.50).
